Astronaut Scholarship Foundation Auction Items for Autographica 2005
The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation's second annual auction held at the Autographica 2005 Show in London concluded on October 29, 2005 with almost $10,000 in bids. All items were donated by the astronauts or members of the organization and all proceeds will go directly to the Foundation for its scholarship program. Thank you to all those who participated.
Lot 1: Return To Flight Missions Apollo 7 and STS-26 Signed Print: $525.00
In celebration of NASA's first shuttle launch in two and a half
years, crew members from the two prior Return To Flight missions
will sign a special print for the auction.
Apollo 7's Commander and Pilot, Wally Schirra and Walt Cunningham, who flew after a tragic pad fire claimed the life of the Apollo 1 astronauts in 1967; and Commander Rick Hauck, with pilot Dick Covey, who led the first launch of Discovery after the loss of Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986, will donate their signatures to this lot.
Print has been matted and framed with archival materials.
Lot 2: Flown Skylab Teleprinter Page from the collection of Bill Pogue: $175.00
A 3.25 by 8.5 inch piece of heat sensitive paper printed with
instructions uplinked to the Skylab 3 (SL-4) crew.
On the reverse of the paper, using a pen (and ink) flown on Skylab, SL-4 Pilot Bill Pogue certifies the paper as having flown over 100 million miles (over 4,300 orbits) in space between May 14, 1973 and February 8, 1974. This lot also includes (though is not pictured) a crew-signed invitation to their launch at Kennedy Space Center.
Lot 3: FLOWN Apollo 11 Thermal Protection Insulation: $612.50
Thermal protection insulation flew to the Moon as part of Apollo
11's Command Module #107 "Columbia" which carried the crew of the
first manned lunar landing mission from July 16-24, 1969.
This pressure-sensitive Kapton polymide tape was part of the spacecraft's thermal protection subsystem and was removed from the hear shield after splashdown.
Item has been matted and framed with archival materials.
Lot 4: Gene Cernan "Full Earth" signed print: $612.00
This stunning 20 x 20 inch print was the view of the Earth as seen
by the Apollo 17 crew traveling toward the Moon on December 1972,
as the final Apollo flight was embarking from Earth to the Moon's
Taurus-Littrow region.
This translunar coast photograph extends from the Mediterranean Sea area to the Antarctica South polar ice cap. This is the first time the Apollo trajectory made it possible to photograph the South polar ice cap. Almost the entire coastline of Africa is clearly visible. The Arabian Peninsula can be seen at the Northeastern edge of Africa. The large island off the coast of Africa is the Malagasy Republic. The Asian mainland is on the horizon toward the Northeast.
Capt. Cernan signed the print and inscribed "To beautiful to have happened by accident..."
The print has been beautifully matted and framed with archival materials.
Lot 5: Michael Collins' Signed Lithograph: $525.00
NASA lithograph of Michael Collins' white spacesuit Apollo 11
portrait, autographed by Collins.
Collins was the Command Module Pilot, orbiting the moon alone, while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin explored the surface on July 20, 1969 during the first moon landing mission.
Lot 6: Kennedy Space Center Tour with Astronaut Bob Crippen: $1050.00
You and three of your guests will view restricted areas of Kennedy
Space Center on an up close and personal tour with astronaut Bob
Crippen.
Not only did Crippen launch from the Center four times, including as pilot of the first flight of the Space Shuttle, he also was Center Director from 1992 to 1994.
On your tour, you will see the massive Vehicle Assembly Building where the Space Shuttle components are brought together for launch. You will also see the pads from where the shuttle departs and the stone crawlerway by which the shuttle travels from the VAB.
Your tour will also include full access to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex and Astronaut Hall of Fame (where Crippen is among the inductees). This auction does not include transportation to or from, or accommodations near Kennedy Space Center. The actual date of the event, not to exceed one year after the close of the auction, will be determined by Robert Crippen's availability. ASF reserves the right to disqualify the high bidder, to reject the high bid, and to accept a bid from a lower bidder, for any reason within their discretion, which shall be exercised in good faith. The winning bidder of this event will be required to submit proof of identity and may be subject to a background check.
Lot 7: John Glenn signed print: $87.50
Mercury Atlas launch print signed by Mercury Astronaut John Glenn.
Glenn was the first American to orbit the earth on Feb. 20, 1962.
He returned to space on Oct. 29, 1998 on Space Shuttle Discovery.
Lot 8: Collection of Leather-bound Astronaut Autographed Books: $446.25
Easton Press, leather-bound collection of astronaut signed books. Included in this lot are Alan Bean's "Apollo: An Eyewitness Account", John Glenn's "A Memoir", and Gene Cernan's "The Last Man on the Moon." A COA accompanies each piece.
Lot 9: Fred Haise signed lithograph: $130.00
NASA lithograph of Fred Haise's white spacesuit Apollo 13 portrait
autographed by Haise. Haise served as Lunar Module Pilot on
Apollo 13, which has been described as a "successful failure."
Lot 10: Robert Crippen signed lithograph: $52.50
NASA lithograph of STS-1 Pilot Robert Crippen signed by Crippen.
Crippen flew on the first orbital flight of the new Shuttle System,
along with Commander John Young.
Lot 11: Apollo 13 Signed Cover: $350.00
Apollo 13 'moonlanding' cover postmarked April 14, 1970 from Kennedy
Space Center, signed by Jim Lovell and Fred Haise. April 14 was
the scheduled date for the crew to land on the moon.
Live Lot 1: Multi-signed Moonrise print taken by the fallen crew of Columbia: $2100.00
Before Columbia and her crew was lost during reentry on February 1,
2003, they captured this striking photograph of a quarter moon
hanging over the Earth's horizon. In the wake of their loss,
President Bush directed the nation to plan for a return the Moon
as part of his Vision for Space Exploration.
