Astronaut Scholarship Foundation Elects New Board

The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation announced today its 2005–2006 Board of Directors and Board of Trustees members.

The Board of Directors are Apollo 15 astronaut Al Worden as Chairman, Shuttle astronaut Robert Crippen as Vice Chairman, Michael Cassara as Secretary and Treasurer and Linn LeBlanc as Executive Director. Other members include Astronaut Scholar alumni Lisa Beeson and Larry Bradley; Shuttle astronaut Dan Brandenstein; Mercury astronaut Scott Carpenter, Apollo astronaut Walt Cunningham, Apollo-Skylab astronaut Owen Garriott, Mercury and Shuttle astronaut John Glenn, Shuttle astronaut Rick Hauck; Gemini and Apollo astronaut James Lovell; Dr. Harvey Miller; Mercury, Gemini and Apollo astronaut Wally Schirra and Bobbie Slayton, widow of Mercury astronaut Deke Slayton.

The Board of Trustees is also comprised of astronauts and celebrities. They are LeVar Burton, Gene Cernan, Suzi Cooper, Walter Cronkite, Bill Dana, Charles Duke, Richard Gordon, Tom Hanks, Henri Landwirth, James Long, Edgar Mitchell, Michael Neukamm, Harrison Schmitt and Thomas Stafford.

These members will serve until May of 2006 when a new slate is voted on.

The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in 1984 by the six surviving members of America's original Mercury astronauts. Its goal is to aid the United States in retaining its world leadership in science and technology by providing scholarships to exceptional college students pursuing these degrees.
