Astronaut Autograph Club

2008 Astronaut Autograph Club Theme Contest

And the winner is...

Thank you to all those who submitted ideas for the 2008 Astronaut Autograph Club (AAC) Contest. There were some great entries and the decision was difficult.

The AAC provides members a signed astronaut photograph and personalized letter for each month of the year. All proceeds go directly to fund scholarships for exceptional college students pursuing degrees in science or engineering. ASF has awarded $2.5 million to 226 deserving students nationwide.

After much consideration, the Foundation chose William McKay's submission of inspiring future generations. He suggested that the astronaut's accompanying letter detail their personal story as to why they chose to become an astronaut. The 2008 AAC will feature twelve hero astronauts from the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab and Space Shuttle programs.

Since it will be 40 years since 1968, why not try to get signatures from surviving members of the Apollo 7 and 8 prime, backup, and support crews. Sorry Wally, we miss you, but are you a turtle?

Hold conference on overcoming obstacles; how NASA dealt with problems (not being first in space, Gemini8 spin, Apollo1 fire, Apollo11 computer overload, Apollo13 explosion, Apollo program shutdown, loss of space shuttles and Mars missions, etc. How NASA coped with these BIG problems and still achieved remarkable success and inspired millions.

When we get autographed photos we purchase the patch(es) associated with his mission(s) then frame them. Several astronauts are associated with numerous missions so you may need to pick an anniversary/theme to avoid sending several patches - or you can send all patches associated with astronaut. Frame optional.

YOU'LL GET MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK IF YOU CAN TALK ARMSTRONG INTO SIGNING. BARRING THAT, HOW ABOUT DUAL SIGNATURES ON ONE ITEM OF THE GEMINI SERIES, TO COUNT AS TWO MONTHS? IT'D BE WORTH IT. ESPECIALLY YOUNG/COLLINS, GT-10.

Entry 11 2007 Jul 18 19:03:54 EDT

We should celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the crew that "saved" 1968, Apollo 8. They were the first to show us our Earth as it truly is. The AAC should not only contain the signatures of the prime and backup crews, but also highlight the "ground astronauts" in mission control.

Entry 12 2007 Jul 18 19:08:05 EDT

"Famous Firsts" edition:

First Apollo astronauts. First to reach the moon. First to land on the moon. First scientist astronuat. First shuttle crew. First American woman in space. First African-American in space. First untethered spacewalk. First crew of each shuttle. First Skylab crew. First ISS crew.

Many options!

Entry 13 2007 Jul 18 19:20:37 EDT

I would love to see one or more crew collections - a single photograph signed by all the astronauts from a single mission. One example would be the crew of STS-31 (Shriverm, Bolden, Hawley, McCandless, amd Sullivan) who delivered the Hubble Space Telescope into orbit.

Entry 14 2007 Jul 18 19:26:41 EDT

How about a drawing from the list of subscribers to the AAF, where a piece of flown memorabilia, donated by one of the Astronauts, would be given away, as a bonus to the autographs.

Entry 19 2007 Jul 18 20:56:20 EDT

Celebrate Wally Schirra's life: Famous Gotcha pictures.

I hope this isnt taked the wrong way but why not make it simple and celebrate the oldest living people in space. Countdown the 12 eldest people to have been in orbit!

Entry 21 2007 Jul 18 21:36:26 EDT

I've been thinking about births since February 10 brought my future astronaut, Daniel. Celebrate with autographs each birth month. January: Aldrin; February: Worden; March: Lovell, Borman, Bean; April: Hauck; May: Carpenter, Ride; June: McDivitt; July: Parazynski; August: Armstrong, Bolden; September:Young, Crippen; October: Anders; November: Garriott, Collins; December: Hawley.

Entry 22 2007 Jul 18 21:36:48 EDT

I want a Mission Control and employee theme. Many of us own the signatures of M-G-A astronauts. I want a "mission works" photo not only signed by the Astronauts, but ALSO the people that did the oft-forgotten work on the ground- suits, food, fuel, and scientific work.

Entry 23 2007 Jul 18 22:32:46 EDT

I think it would be nice to have a theme tying together the Apollo astronauts of the past and the future moon travelers of the future (some of the newest astronauts) who may be voyaging to the moon in the future moon program of NASA.

Entry 24 2007 Jul 18 22:33:21 EDT

Surviving X-15 astronauts: Robert White, Bill Dana, Joe Engle, Pete Knight, and Robert Rushworth. Include Neil Armstrong with an X-15 theme since he made it into space in a big way later. Finish series with SpaceshipOne astronauts Mike Melville and Brian Binnie who went much the same way.

Entry 25 2007 Jul 18 23:42:45 EDT

How about a focus on civilian astronauts? There have been many of them and the list even includes the likes of Neil Armstrong and Harrison Schmitt. You could even through in the recent space tourists although I guess technically they are cosmonauts.
