Hoot Gibson on Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?

Five-time Space Shuttle Astronaut Hoot Gibson tested his knowledge on FOX's hit game show Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, on Friday, Oct. 3, 2008.

Capt. Robert "Hoot" Gibson participated on the game show to raise funds for a charity he holds near and dear to his heart — the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF). Gibson is one of 14 astronauts who serves on the Foundation's Board of Directors, and one of 80 who participate in raising money to provide college scholarships to students who exhibit motivation, imagination and exceptional performance in the science or engineering field of their major. The Foundation awards 19 $10,000 scholarships annually and has disbursed over $2.5 million nationwide.

"It was honor to have the chance to not only raise meaningful funds for the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation but to also use the opportunity to appear on 5th Grader to tell the world about the unique work the Foundation is doing to help keep America at the forefront of science and technology," said Gibson. "The Foundation provides a unique opportunity to give back to a country that has given so much to us, and well of course I wanted to see if I was indeed smarter than a 5th grader!"
