Lovell was selected as part of the NASA Astronaut Group 2 in 1962. Lovell served as Pilot of Gemini 7 and Command Pilot of Gemini 12. This experience led him to become Command Module Pilot of Apollo 8, man’s maiden voyage to the Moon. Lovell was then slated to crew Apollo 14, but after a switch, he became Commander of the famous Apollo 13 mission. Lovell’s heroic leadership in the face of potential disaster made him a legend in the history of human spaceflight. Lovell was inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in 1993, and currently serves as ASF Chairman Emeritus.
