Markerless Pose Estimation Software for Monitoring Physical Therapy Regimens
Marcos Zachary, a 2020 Astronaut Scholar, graduatedfrom the University of Minnesotain May of 2021 with a B.S. in Biomedical Engineeringand a minor in Computer Science.He is the co-founder of HEBA Medical, LLC, a startupwith the mission of increasing theaccessibility of state-of-the-art software to alleviatethe burden of subjective andinconsistent active monitoring of degenerative anddystrophic disease through phoneand wearable technology paired with advanced analytics.During his undergrad, heworked with Dr. Bitterman, whose work on idiopathicpulmonary fibrosis (IPF) gave himthe opportunity to engage in mathematical modeling;worked on a NSF-funded researchexperience at the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicineprogram at Johns Hopkins,where he studied the immunobiology of IPF; and workedwith Professor MathewJohnson whose neuromodulation lab inspired the creationof his startup. Currently, heworks as an R&D Software Engineer in the Urology Departmentat Boston Scientific.
In addition to his studies and research, he was anactive member in the UniversityHonors Program and the Tau Beta Pi Engineering HonorsSociety. He is also active incommunity service with St. Mary’s Coptic OrthodoxChurch and a founding member ofthe student group Conversation Club, where he enjoystalking with fellow studentsabout a wide range of subjects such as politics. Besidesleadership activities andcommunity services, he is a self-taught pianist, anavid skier, and a soccer enthusiast.In the future, Marcos plans to go to medical schoolwhere he intends to combine hisunique software development experience and interestin biomedical entrepreneurshipwith clinical experience to create cheap and accessibledigital health solutions thatserve vulnerable populations in the US and the MiddleEast.
